The pūhoro design is a powerful symbol deeply connected to movement, strength, and identity — qualities that are central to kapa haka performance.

Traditionally seen on the thighs and legs of warriors, the pūhoro represents the flow and energy of water, symbolising speed, agility, and the graceful power of movement. In kapa haka, these same qualities are expressed through haka, poi, waiata-ā-ringa, and mau rākau, where every motion carries meaning and purpose.

The sweeping lines of the pūhoro can be seen as the wairua (spirit) that drives performers — a reflection of mana, pride, and connection to whakapapa (genealogy). It embodies the balance between strength and rhythm, showing how performers move with precision, unity, and cultural integrity.
